QME Announces Complimentary Engineering Masterclass Series

QME launches free engineering masterclass

The Queensland Mining and Engineering Exhibition (QME) has unveiled a new engineering-focused masterclass series for its 2024 event, scheduled to take place from July 23-25 in Mackay, near the Bowen Basin.

These masterclasses will cover various aspects of engineering roles. Statutory trainer and assessor Hamish Beattie will lead a session on supervision, targeting personnel responsible for safety, welfare, productivity, and compliance within mining organisations. Beattie will elaborate on planning for efficiency and profitability through effective supervision. Additionally, he will conduct a masterclass on hazard identification, offering strategies for improved hazard identification and risk perception, aimed at implementing effective and reliable controls.

A hands-on workshop on bulk material handling will also be part of the series. Engineers will delve into belt conveyor component testing, focusing on designing and optimizing conveyor systems while addressing common issues and their prevention.

Priscilla Freire from TUNRA Bulk Solids, a University of Newcastle-based non-profit specialised consultancy, emphasised the practical and engineering-specific nature of these masterclasses. “When you’re attending an event like QME and being exposed to new technology, gaining an understanding of how the combination of material and components affects belt conveyor utilisation is important, especially to optimise and streamline your belt conveyor operations,” she said.

QME Exhibition director Samantha Martin highlighted the added value the masterclasses bring to the event. “Engineers will love the large-scale mining equipment on display this year from Hastings Deering, Komatsu, and Hitachi Construction Machinery,” she said. “They will also get a chance to see the latest innovations paving the way for future mining technology in the decarbonisation showcase, and can have face-to-face conversations with major mining companies, including Anglo American, BHP + BMA, Bravus, BUMA, Glencore, Mackellar Group, and Whitehaven Coal in the Mining House Pavilion.”

Beyond the educational opportunities, engineers can benefit from networking events like the QME opening party and the Queensland Mining Awards, providing avenues for professional growth and relaxation.

While entry to QME 2024 is free, masterclass participation requires registration. These sessions are designed to benefit engineers at all stages of their careers, from students and graduates to management and site personnel.
