Metso to Build India’s First E-Waste Recycling Plant

Metso inks order for India’s first electronic waste recycling facility

In a significant step towards sustainable waste management, Metso has secured an order from Hindalco Industries to deliver an extensive electronic waste recycling facility near Hindalco’s Birla copper unit in India.

Metso will provide an integrated setup that includes three Kaldo furnaces, an anode furnace, an anode casting shop, gas cleaning systems, supporting equipment, and basic engineering for the plant. This state-of-the-art facility is anticipated to be constructed and operational within two years.

The new facility, which Metso claims will be the first of its kind in India, is projected to produce 50,000 tonnes of low-carbon copper annually. “We are excited and honoured to have been trusted with this order,” said Metso vice president of smelting Jyrki Makkonen. “Hindalco is the world’s second-largest copper rod player and India’s largest copper manufacturer.”

Highlighting the environmental benefits, Makkonen added, “The planet positive process to be delivered by Metso is energy-efficient and allows high metal recoveries. It also conforms to tight emission controls with zero liquid discharge.”

Metso’s ‘planet positive’ approach emphasizes sustainability, with products and services designed to meet customers’ sustainability requirements and leverage Metso’s competitive strengths. This portfolio, which includes over 100 products, is recognized for being more energy- and water-efficient compared to industry standards.

In related news, Metso recently announced the launch of a new plant for manufacturing precursor cathode active material for lithium-ion batteries, underscoring the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable technologies.
